I had been living in New York City for nearly a year and a half when a move to Oklahoma began absolutely inevitable. I wanted to cry on a daily basis. I just HAD to fall in love with someone in the military. A fellow native Georgian, he was just as unhappy about this half-year assignment to Oklahoma. I was seriously considering whether or not our 3 year long distance relationship could handle six more months of hours in cars, planes, and trains.
I left the wonderful, incomparable, best-place-ever Brooklyn Heights in December 2010 and arrived in the arid, windy, flat, desolate Lawton Oklahoma just after New Years. Depression hit immediately. The best reviewed restaurant in town was a McDonalds; the best grocery store, Walmart. Seriously?!
Then came Goodwill. I had hope. I pulled into the parking lot of an unassuming Goodwill on a cold Sunday afternoon. The sale sign said Yellow tags were "buy one, get one." Even better, Pink tags were only 99 cents! I head straight to dresses and spot a silk jumpsuit, then a sweater dress with sequined shoulders, then hot pink chiffon.
I am drawn to the subtle ruffles on the collar of this chiffon gown. Hey, a pink tag... only 99 cents. GASP!!! Does that say? Oh Lord, it does! That is a HALSTON tag! An authentic one. Seriously!?! Once over my shock, I thoroughly inspect the dress, which I discover to be perfect. I call and text everyone I know that could possibly appreciate my joy.
Ok, Oklahoma may not be so bad :)
